ARSENIC IN ORE

Arsenic and Arsenopyrite in Gold Ore: What to Consider in JinChan Testing

The arsenic content reported by an assay does not determine the gold-leaching result on its own. Process assessment requires understanding which minerals contain arsenic, how gold is associated with them, and how much gold is accessible to the leach solution. A decision on direct leaching or pretreatment must therefore be based on material characterization and testwork.

What does arsenic analysis show?

Chemical analysis makes it possible to determine the As content in the material under study. But this number alone cannot determine which mineral contains arsenic, whether gold is associated with it, how much gold is exposed, whether the material will leach well, whether pre-treatment will be required, and what the JinChan consumption will be.

Chemical analysis answers the question “how much As”, but does not fully answer the question “how will gold behave.”
Total AsChemical analysis shows the total arsenic content in the sample
MineralogyDetermines which minerals As is associated with and what structure the material has
Gold deportment / association AuShows where and in what form gold is located, if such research has been carried out
Leaching testShows the actual behavior of the prepared sample under selected conditions

None of these steps replace the others.

As in g/t or % is a compositional characteristic and not a ready-made prediction of gold recovery.

What is arsenopyrite in the context of gold ore

Arsenopyrite - FeAsS. It may be present in gold ores along with pyrite and other minerals.

The very fact of the presence of arsenopyrite does not yet indicate what part of the gold is associated with it, whether gold is located inside the grain, whether free gold is present and how accessible it is for solution. These issues require mineralogical studies and/or technological tests.

Arsenopyrite in the sample ≠ proof that all the gold is associated with arsenopyrite.

Why is it important to know the form of gold?

For leaching, the availability of gold to contact the solution is critical. If some of the gold is contained within mineral grains, measuring only the total Au and As content does not indicate the extent of its availability.

Without research, it is impossible to say in advance that gold is located in the arsenopyrite lattice, in microinclusions, on the surface, in pyrite or in quartz.

The mineralogical association must be determined rather than assumed from chemical analysis alone.
Ore A

As high

The mineralogy is known; Au association investigated.

Ore B

As high

Mineralogy different or unknown; Au association unknown.

Do not automatically receive the same technological scheme
Characteristics + testwork

The direct mode showed an acceptable result for the task

Further optimization.

The result requires additional research

Study of causes and pretreatment testwork if warranted.

What Guangxi Senhe officially says

In the Instructions for use section, Guangxi Senhe explicitly includes high-sulfur and high-arsenic gold ore in the list of applicable ore types for JinChan. On the same page, the manufacturer recommends conducting a beneficiation test and selecting optimal conditions taking into account the characteristics of the ore and harmful component.

The indication of high-arsenic ores in the field of application means the manufacturer’s declared applicability of the product to this class of raw materials, but does not establish universal extraction, reagent consumption or the absence of the need for preliminary preparation.

Direct published example from Kazakhstan - Akzhal

Karimova and co-authors studied ore from the Akzhal deposit, Kazakhstan. Despite the title of the publication, the experimental part included comparative leaching with JinChan.

Stage/characteristicPublished data
Feed oreAu 1,83 g/t; the main ore minerals are arsenopyrite and pyrite; other sulfide minerals were also present.
FlotationAfter closed-circuit flotation, a concentrate with Au 20,92 g/t was obtained.
Preliminary preparationOxidative roasting of the concentrate, then aqueous leaching.
Comparative LeachingOnly after the described preparation was the material used in the JinChan and NaCN tests; for the roasted concentrate, the authors reported 88,5% gold recovery at comparable solution concentrations.

Results of a specific technological scheme Karimova et al. for material from the Akzhal deposit; are not JinChan standards for other ores.

What Akzhal's research does and doesn't prove

Proves

  • JinChan was experimentally applied to pretreated ore material, where the main ore minerals were arsenopyrite and pyrite;
  • flotation concentration, oxidation roasting and water treatment are used before JinChan;
  • Leaching results have been published for this prepared material.

Doesn't prove

  • that all arsenic ore requires roasting;
  • that all As hinders JinChan or that roasting is necessary precisely because of As;
  • that JinChan is not capable of working without roasting on other As-containing material;
  • that 88,5% or the published mode can be transferred to another object.
Published technological chain ≠ universal scheme for all As-containing ores.

The second direct example is the gold-sulfide polymetallic ore of Kazakhstan

Malyshev et al. studied the gold-sulfide polymetallic ore of the Republic of Kazakhstan and compared NaCN, YX500 and JinChan after technological preparation of the concentrate.

Stage/characteristicResults of a specific published work
Feed oreAu 0,38 g/t.
FlotationA concentrate with Au 5,3 g/t was obtained.
Preliminary preparationBefore leaching, the concentrate was subjected to oxidative roasting; The authors describe the oxidation of sulfides, arsenopyrite grains, pyrite and the carbonaceous component.
JinChanFor the roasted concentrate, the published Au recovery rate was approximately 86,5%.

All parameters and results relate only to the specific published work and do not constitute a recommendation for other ore bodies.

What do the two published studies have in common?

Both direct published examples of JinChan on arsenopyrite materials have a significant common feature: JinChan was tested after preliminary technological preparation of the concentrate, including oxidative roasting.

These publications confirm the applicability of JinChan to appropriate preprocessed materials.

They do not prove that JinChan always requires oxidative roasting on As-containing ore, nor the opposite - that JinChan allows one to refuse pretreatment for high-arsenic ore.

High As ≠ automatically refractory ore.

Is it necessary to pre-oxidize the ore?

This is determined by the properties of the specific material and the results of the study.

If gold is not sufficiently available through direct leaching, the test program may require a pretreatment study. The choice of a specific technology is a separate task and should not be automatically assigned by the As value.

Published pretreatment ≠ universal mandatory scheme.

Why can't you take cyanide pretreatment and automatically transfer it to JinChan?

For refractory arsenic-bearing gold ores, there is a large literature on cyanidation and pretreatment. But just because a particular pretreatment improved subsequent cyanidation does not in itself prove the same effect for JinChan.

As thresholds, parameters and results of cyanide-specific pretreatment should not be converted into JinChan recommendations. To do this, you need direct JinChan testwork or your own testing of a specific material.

Direct test or pretreatment test?

Initial sample
Chemical + available mineralogical characteristics
Supervised JinChan test
If the result requires further investigationCause Analysis
If there are groundsSeparate pretreatment testwork program
Repeated JinChan test

Pretreatment should be tested as a process hypothesis and not assigned based on As value alone.

What data is desirable to have before the test?

Chemistry

  • Au;
  • As;
  • S;
  • other available elements relevant to the task.

Mineralogy

  • main ore minerals;
  • the presence of arsenopyrite and pyrite;
  • information about gold deportment, if researched.

Preparation

  • size;
  • grinding scheme;
  • method for selecting comparable samples.

Testwork

  • JinChan pH and concentration;
  • Au in solution and residue;
  • actual reagent consumption;
  • kinetics, if studied.

The composition of the program depends on the task: not each of the listed analyzes is required for any primary test.

What to do if As is high, but there is no mineralogy

The high As content is a reason to pay more attention to the characteristics of the material, but in itself does not allow choosing a technological scheme.

  • document chemical composition;
  • properly prepare a representative sample;
  • conduct controlled laboratory testwork;
  • analyze Au in starting material, solution and residue;
  • Based on the results, decide whether additional research is needed.

Neither recovery nor pretreatment can be prescribed in advance based solely on As content.

What can you say to the customer?

You can say

  • Guangxi Senhe includes high-arsenic gold ores in the scope of JinChan;
  • JinChan has been tested in published studies on arsenopyrite-related materials;
  • in the direct studies found, the concentrates were pretreated before JinChan;
  • The scheme must be confirmed by testwork of a specific ore.

Can't promise

  • direct leaching of any high-As ore;
  • absence or mandatory pretreatment;
  • a specific recovery or reagent consumption;
  • no influence of As;
  • universal technology according to As value.

Practical conclusion

For arsenic-bearing gold ore, the key issue is not just the amount of As, but the mineralogy and availability of the gold. The official manufacturer classifies high arsenic gold ores as JinChan's applications, and published studies support JinChan's use on arsenopyrite pretreated materials. However, the need and type of pretreatment must be determined individually for a specific ore.
